In what could be considered a coup for provincial politics, Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner presented then Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva with a Boca Juniors soccer jersey in early 2009. Why a Boca Juniors jersey intead of Argentina national team jersey? An uninitiated observer might ask this question, but anyone familiar with state of internal soccer politics in Argentina would be able to give you the answer.

Clube Atletico de Boca Juniors represents one of the oldest and most successfull soccer clubs in Argentine history. Located in the working class district of Buenos Aires, the club enjoys immense popularity among a major voting block. In fact, Boca Juniors’ popularity spans beyond the city limits, and the club is somewhat mythically regarded to enjoy the allegience of just over 50% of Argentina’s population.

This context helps us understand Fernández’ decision. Choosing a less glamorous, every day symbol of Argentine life, rather than the more nationalist one, allowed her to make a bold, populist statement that is likely to appeal to the core of Argentina’s voting demographic.
